OREGON


  • Oregon was jointly occupied by US and Great Britain (See Rush-Bagot Treaty of 1818)

  • Polk had campaigned for sole ownership for the US

  • From southern border of Alaska (Russian territory) (54 40 parallel)

  • To southern Oregon Territory

  • Americans supported this

  • And nearly 5,000 Americans settled there after crossing Oregon Trail

  • After Polk was elected though

  • He sought a compromise at the 49th parallel

  • Because he planned to attack Mexico

  • And didn’t want trouble on two borders

  • Oregon Treaty 1846

  • US got Washington state, Oregon, Idaho and parts of Montana

MEXICAN CESSION

  • Polk also wanted to add California to the Union

  • Especially San Francisco Bay

  • To open US trade with Asia

  • But Mexico had strong territorial claims to California

  • Missions etc.

  • Combination

  • Of claims to California

  • And troops in Texas

  • Led to conflict with Mexico


GADSDEN PURCHASE 1853

  • Land purchased from Mexico

  • To build a transcontinental railroad from New Orleans to Los Angeles
