OREGON

Oregon was jointly occupied by US and Great Britain (See Rush-Bagot Treaty of 1818)
Polk had campaigned for sole ownership for the US
From southern border of Alaska (Russian territory) (54 40 parallel)
To southern Oregon Territory
Americans supported this
And nearly 5,000 Americans settled there after crossing Oregon Trail
After Polk was elected though
He sought a compromise at the 49th parallel
Because he planned to attack Mexico
And didn’t want trouble on two borders
Oregon Treaty 1846
US got Washington state, Oregon, Idaho and parts of Montana
MEXICAN CESSION
Polk also wanted to add California to the Union
Especially San Francisco Bay
To open US trade with Asia
But Mexico had strong territorial claims to California
Missions etc.
Combination
Of claims to California
And troops in Texas
Led to conflict with Mexico
